This last Tuesday, we took Matthew in to see Dr. Catten, Vernal's ENT. Matthew has had a weird annoying cough. He would have days with no cough at all, then there were days when we were waiting for him to cough up one of his lungs. And, it was completely different from a cough you would get with a cold. So, I was fed up with it.
Day of the appointment, no cough, none at all. I wasn't about to cancel the appointment, I was going to tell him everything, and I wasn't going to leave without getting anything. After telling Dr. Catten everything, he came to the conclusion that it's due to allergies. I kind of expected that but wanted him to have some magic medicine that would make it better. No magic medicine but Zyrtec was advised. As we are talking, Dr. Catten decides to look in Matthew's ears. He said, very surprised, that they had a lot of fluid, and that they looked pretty bad. No ear infection (and Matthew has only had one ear infection his whole life), just a lot of fluid that has been sitting there for some time.
"He needs tubes", says Dr. Catten.
I say "OK".
Dr. Catten says "Thursday?!".
I say "OK".
The next thing I know I am signing papers for the surgery.
It happened all so fast, I don't remember much else.
Thursday came very quickly. We were to be at the hospital by 7:15. By 7:30, all the paper work was done. 7:40, they took us back to talk with the anesthseologist. 8:00, they take Matthew back. 8:06, surgery is done, they let us go back with Matthew. 8:36, we were leaving the hospital.
This is the way it should be done. We didn't have any time to really think about all that could go wrong, or any of that other stuff. It just happened. Comparing this to Allison's heart surgery, it was completly different. I had known Allisons was going to happen, eventuallly, within the first week of her birth. I had a loooong time to think about it. Matthew, I just blinked, and it happened.
What we are really trying not to think of, is... how much money Dr. Catten made in six minutes!

Thank goodness for insurance. Even if it is a pain in the you know what. I'm glad everything went well. Hopefully this will help Matthew to feel better.
ReplyDeleteIt is so much better when it happens fast and you just say, "Okay." Have the tubes helped the cough?
ReplyDeleteI am so glad everything went so well! I can't believe you have had to have surgeries on both of your kids!
ReplyDeleteGlad the surgery went so well. Maybe allergies come along with the name-my Matthew has a cough a lot from allergies/asthma. Good luck with all that comes with the allergies.
ReplyDeleteI'm on the count down for the baby-Nov.2 is the due date. I am looking forward to doing ANYTHING that is comfortable, because right now I'm MISERABLE! All is healthy and well though, I just think my body wasn't made to have babies :) HAH! Anyway, love your blog.
